Kansas City to get Google's 1 Gbps fiber optic internet

Engadget has reported that Kansas City has been chosen as the winner in the lobby for Google's first fiber optic network, which can reach speeds of 1Gbps.  It should be operational sometime in 2012.  For comparison, the United States current average is 3.9 Mbps.  South Korea is the current leader in average internet speed, at a relatively blazing 14.6 Mbps.  Google says this isn't the only city that will get the amazingly fast internet connection, and that other cities are in the works.
